Living at Kagawa University International House

Arriving at Kagawa University International House

When you arrive at the Dormitory you should check first your wardrobe and drawer. Sometimes the former resident left things like a pan or clothes hanger. So just check before buying new things to prevent finding out that you would not have needed them at all.

Things that you need to buy:
- Linen for the bed
- Detergent (for clothes and dishes)
- Dishes (fork, spoon, knife, dish, chopsticks, cup, ...)
- Toilet paper
- Food and drinks
- Slippers

Things that you maybe need to buy:
- Hangers for clothes
- Pillow
- Blanket
- Pot or pan if you want to cook.

Where should I buy these things?

There is a 100 Yen Shop near the Dorm called Daiso. You should look there first. You will definitely get Dishes, hangers and detergent there, and everything is only 100 Yen.
Food and drinks can be purchased “The Michael”.
Bedcover, Blanket and Pillow can be found at “The Big”.

Go to the Shops (as indicated red on the map)

From the Dormitory just turn right and walk down the street until you get to the second small bridge. After crossing the river you should go over the footbridge. If you are on the footbridge you can already see “The Michel” and “The Big”. So after crossing the footbridge just go in the direction of the shops. You might find even cheaper shops located in the area, but you better ask another student to show you around for those.
For the 100-Yen Shop you have to go further. It is on the left and you can’t miss it.

Going to Kotoden Yashima (Train station, green on the map)

Take the small path between the tennis court and the Yashima Ryo. At the end of the path turn right and follow the street. After crossing the track turn right again. You can see the Station when you cross the track. For the Train to Kawaramachi you have to cross the track again after going through the railway building.

Daily living costs

Eating in the cafeteria

If you eat in the cafeteria you will have to pay somewhere between 400 and 600 Yen. It really depends on what you are eating. Something with meat is mostly between 250 and 400 Yen, for a small salad it is 100-160 Yen. Rice, depending on the size, is 70-100 Yen.

It is possible to bring your own food and heat it in the microwave.

Buying food and drinks

In Japan milk products and meat are a bit expensive, so you should calculate a bit more money for these products.

Examples (as of May 2009)

Bread (1/2 Baguette or toast) 150-250 Yen
Coke 1.5 l ---
170-200 Yen
Water 0.5 l --- 99 Yen
Milk 1 l --- 150-200 Yen
1 bell pepper--- 99 Yen

Bus and Train or Bike

For the way from the Dorm to the University you can choose between going by Bus and Train or going by Bike.

Train

The easiest Way is to buy a Train ticket for one month. From Yashima to Kawaramachi the price is ~5500 Yen. When you buy your Train ticket for the first time, you have to pay 500 Yen extra for the card. When you arrive at the station, you put the card on the distinguished area at the machine.
Green light -> everything is ok.
Red light -> take off the card, wait and try again. If the red light comes on again, ask for help as there could be many reasons.

!! You can use your ticket also as Iruca if you want to go somewhere else. But you have to put money on the card before. !!

Yashima <-> Kawaramachi
You have to take the Shido Line from Yashima to Kawaramachi. It takes about 15 min.

Bus

When the bus arrives you get in. On the right side is a small machine which dispenses a small paper slip. You need to take this paper. On the paper you can see the number of the station where you got on the bus.
Listen carefully to the announcements. You have to press the button if your station is announced.

There are three ways to pay for the bus.

1. When you get off the bus, show the paper and your bus pass to the driver. Put the paper in the plastic box.
2. If you have an Iruca, put the card on the Iruca field when you get on the bus. In this case you don’t need the paper slip with the number. When you get off the bus you put your card on the Iruca field next to the driver.
3. If you don’t have a bus pass or Iruca you should look at the number printed on the paper. When you arrive at the Bus stop where you want to get out, you have to take a look at the display next to the exit. The numbers show the amount you have to pay. Take the money and put it, together with the paper, in the small plastic box next to the driver. You should put in the exact amount because they don’t give change. If you have only 500 Yen or 1000Yen you can change money. Go to the driver and put the money in the designated slot. Lower value coins will come out of the machine in exchange.
